We really like this thing. We've had no less than 3 other electric kettles, including the Adagio Teas 3 UtiliTEA Variable-Temperature 30-Ounce Electric Kettle, and this one just embarrasses the other 3. The Adagio one was OK, but had 2 problems. First it was too small (yeah, in retrospect the volume is right in the title, but hey, we didn't think about it). Second, the variable temperature control didn't have temperatures. This teapot is BIG, easily large enough to handle our largest teapot and the giant french press we have. It'll do 48oz. if you respect the max capacity line, a bit more if you're willing to push the envelope a bit. It also has the actual temperature settings right on the dial. Why bother heating the water to 212 if you're using a french press (195 please!)? It finishes it's cycle much more quickly by skipping that last 20 degrees, and saves a bit of electricity while you're at it. There's also a handy little pull-out temperature list in case you can't remember what temperature you want for green tea, for example. The pot is also beautiful!
As for the primary complaint, about the smell, it's definitely there when you first unpack the kettle. It lasted for about a week or so. We just left the top open when we weren't using the pot, and it seems to have gone away. Just as other reviewers have mentioned, it's not noticeable when you're put the water in with anything.
So, to reiterate, we've had this thing for maybe a month now, and we love it!

Bad Taste and Smell! - Wendy Bentley -
We owned one of these for two years, then the heating element went bad but we loved the pot so we bought another in August of 2010. The manufacturer has changed the method of sealing the pot and are now using some seriously foul smelling material that makes the water taste terrible! We have tried everything we can think of to remove the oder including manufacturer suggestions. We loved the original but whoever makes it now is sub-standard by far! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! IT IS NOT like the original. Very sad.
