I've been using the Dualit electric kettle since January 2010. I keep it within arms reach on my desk at work, and I drink tea throughout the day so it gets plenty of use. I have been using it Monday through Friday for over six months now, nor have I treated it gently (see lid closure issue, below). No leaks, no cracks, no warping. You fill it with water, (firmly) close the lid, set it on its base, press down the switch, and it goes to work heating the water to a boil. It shuts itself off about 15 seconds after starting to boil, or about 5 seconds after coming to a maximum rolling boil. If you remove it from the base while it's on, it shuts itself off automatically.


However, it is not quite perfect. Because it is tapered at the top to a small opening, I can't fill it through the lid opening at the water cooler at my office - there isn't enough room around the spigot. So I have to fill it through the spout....even through the instructions explicitly say not to. For home use, filling from a sink, it won't be an issue.


Also of note, the instructions say, in bold type:

"when you lift the kettle from the base, you will see drops of moisture on the surface of the power base. This is the steam used to switch the kettle off automatically, which then condenses and escapes through vents in the underside of the kettle. This is perfectly normal, and should not be cause for alarm or returning the kettle."

Sounds like this is maybe a sore subject with Dualit? Anyway, I haven't noticed any undue water on the base.


The biggest nitpick I have, and it may be more than a nitpick for some, is with the lid closure. Unlike other electric kettles I've owned, which have a soft-touch button which gently opens the top lid, and you press it gently down to close, this Dualit lid has a friction closure, and it is *very* stiff. There are two tiny "outdents" on the lid which rub against the inside of the opening and keep it closed. It takes a firm grip and a firm (but careful) tug to open the lid, and a very firm push to close it. I guess I could have tried taking a pair of pliers to it, but after a few days I just took to slamming the lid closed with the palm of my hand. BAM! Every weekday, for six months, slamming it closed: I do think it points up the sturdy build quality of the unit. However, it is definitely a design flaw in my view, versus other electric kettles. Maybe my unit was unusual, but those potential buyers perhaps with arthritis, a weak grip, or who simply don't want to deal with this daily, should beware. I was going to give one of these to my parents, but ended up giving them a Breville SK500 due to this.


Other than the lid-closure issue it seems well-designed. The handle is far enough away that I've never accidentally touched the hot metal part of the kettle, as I have occasionally with other electric kettles I've owned. The bottom of the kettle gets quite warm, but not hot, so you could take it off the base upon boiling and set it down on most surfaces without a hot pad. There are fill-level windows on both sides of the unit (most kettles just have one fill window).

All in all this seems (so far) to be a well-built unit, with one design issue keeping it from being a five-star product. Most of the kettles I've owned have lasted for 2 to 3 years of daily use and then eventually the thermostat gradually fails and takes longer and longer to shut off the unit after reaching boil. If this unit checks out before then, I'll update my review.

The craftsmanship and finish on the stainless Dualit kettle are superior to all others. Unfortunately, the kettle has two major flaws, and the company has an even bigger flaw.

Kettle flaw #1: The cordless base is thin plastic and warps after several months of once-a-day use.

Kettle flaw #2: It's not a matter of 'if', but 'when' it will leak due to cracked plastic windows in the side of the kettle. The plastic windows are pressed into the side openings, which puts the plastic under stress. Repeated use of the kettle causes fine cracks in the plastic where the stresses are concentrated. I guarantee your kettle will leak from these fine stress/heat cracks after approximately 1 year of use. If you have any doubt, google (or any other search) for Dualit, leak, cracked plastic.

Company flaw: horrible warranty and they won't stand behind their product. I had to pay for a replacement cordless base when mine warped after a few months. This was annoying but not a show stopper at with shipping, since the kettle was awesome. Then a few months later the windows began to leak, and Dualit had nothing to say except that there was no repair or replacement part available and they would be happy to sell me a replacement kettle. That seemed utterly ridiculous to me, especially at their prices.

For the 0 I paid for this thing, I could have bought and disposed of two to four of the competitor brand stainless kettles. My misunderstanding was that I assumed the Dualit was not a cheap (in quality, not price) disposable kettle. Do yourself a favor and do the internet search (Dualit, leak, cracked plastic) then, DO NOT buy one.

I was surprised to see only three previous reviews, none positive.

We have owned this item for over a year. It was purchased to replace yet another stove-top tea kettle that had been "forgotten" until it boiled away the water and started to get dangerously hot. Therefore the auto-turn-off feature was the most important one for us.

This feature has never failed to work on our model. There have also been no leaks or other integrity issues. It has heated the water to boiling for a range of volumes of liquid.

The only reason I have not given it five stars is that not having experience with other products of this type, I don't know whether some truly superior choices in this price range exist out there.

The kettle worked for a few weeks, then it stopped shutting off automatically, then the lid started popping open. It now requires continuous supervision to boil water.

I have had this kettle for years and have had no problems with it, and it is used just about every day! Occasionally it needs cleaning by boiling some vinegar/water solution and then boiling a clean pot of water thereafter.

I owned previous model for many years and it was an excellent kettle. This one is an overpriced junk.

First of all after less then a year of very light use it started leaking water where the bottom of the handle is attached to the pot.

Also the design of the lid required better quality of assembly and/or parts. With the current quality it stacks in a such position that you can not turn it to open or close position. You can get it out using knife, but this is really bad quality of parts as my previous Krupp kettle served several years without any problems.

The smell of plastic diminished with time, but remains pretty strong for the whole life of the kettle.

Avoid this product. For the same price you can get a better stainless steel unit although all of them are assembled in China. So it is better to buy it in a real shop so that you can return it quickly if unit is defective.

Most water kettles close to this size are made with plastic, with the heating element in the container itself. I was looking for a metal alternative due to the concerns about plastic chemicals leeching into the water, and I required it be small since I make one cup of coffee once a day and it's just me. No need for a huge kettle or a water heater. I was in 99 Ranch Market (a Chinese grocery) and they had the Tayama kettles for .95 (the sign said they normally retailed for .95 so I have no idea how Amazon did their pricing for this), so I got one. It's exactly what I wanted. It heats water quickly, it's metal, you don't need to drag the cord around to pour, and it looks way better than any of the plastic ones.

I'm always around to turn the kettle off so I haven't tested out the auto-shutoff feature extensively, but when I tried it once it did work, after it bubbled furiously for a minute.

Bought one in March 2010. It died in June. The replacement is working so far. saves burning gas, its hot in New Orleans in the summer. Also fast and shuts itself off. I had burned the bottoms out of several whistling kettles due to faulty hearing. Seems to be a good product for the job, if it lasts. I was dubious about this kettle after reading the reviews saying it didn't shut off, but it was such a good deal for the price, that I figured if it didn't work I could always return it.

Well having used it for a few weeks now, I can say with certainty that it DOES work.

I think the problem other reviewers were having may have been that it states in the manual that YOU NEED TO HAVE THE FILTER ATTACHED INSIDE IN ORDER FOR AUTO SHUT-OFF TO ACCUR (mine was loose inside the kettle; I'm not sure if it was supposed to be attached when it arrived, but it was easy enough to slot it into place). I don't really know why this is the case, but I attached it and the kettle shut off after about 5 minutes.

I think this is another thing - the fact that the kettle boils for so long makes you feel initially like it will just boil forever and you have no choice but to shut it off yourself, but this is not the case. It is just a longer boil time.

So if you can read the manual, attach the filter and wait about 5 minutes for the kettle to boil, this is a great product. It's lighter and not as sturdy as other models, but for the price it's great and it does exactly what I need it to do, which is to boil water. Recommended.

After seeing warnings against another variable temperature kettle (branded by a major tea vendor) that's totally hit-or-miss by 20 degrees, I was cautiously hopeful that Capresso's H2O Pro would avoid that problem.

When this kettle arrived, I decided to play the skeptic and put to test it. Would it really hit 140F on the dot? Just a little above/below? A lot?

After a short brew time, *two* other thermometers (one analog, one digital) agreed with the kettle: 140.0F on the dot!

This is one excellently designed variable-temperature kettle! This kettle has now brought about more casual tea drinking. No more do I have to watch a stove or electric kettle like a hawk and stop it at the right temperature!

Temperatures are programmable in 10F increments from 110F (warm on the wrist) to 212F (boiling). I like to make tea with 140F (a bit over scalding) as I use plenty of Japanese green tea that is temperature-sensitive. And I love how it can also be programmed to keep the same temperature continuously (or not, as you please).

I only have 2 snags with this kettle:

- At the temperatures I like, increments in 5, 2 or 1 degree make better sense than 10 degree increments.

- When taking the kettle off its base, it resets its temperature defaults to 212 (boiling). I'd prefer that it automatically kept my preferences while I'm pouring the occasional cup throughout the day. But that's just me. Turning it to the preferred temp again is just a few thumb-wiggles away (which makes the 10-degree increments a balance of convenience).

Since no other variable-temp kettle I can find on the market is better than this one, these are just would-likes and don't detract from what I feel is a kettle at the head of its market.

I use this everyday but there are 2 things I wish it had - the temperatures only increase/decrease by 10 degrees, I would prefer 5 but this is ok. I really wish a timer or alert would go off when the correct temperature is reached. But I do use it everyday and it heats up water fast.

I have been searching for a replacement cordless kettle for our Capresso H2O Plus 48 oz "glass" kettle. As other have reported the plastic lid on the Capresso fell apart precisely at the end of the one-year warranty. Two screws hold the lid to the glass and they are exposed to the hot steam whenever the unit is on. This is a poor design. Moreover, the metal heating element in the bottom of the kettle began to rust after a few months and it was a continuous effort to remove that weekly. Finally, I never did completely get rid of the annoying plastic smell/taste that others have also complained about.
After my so-so experience with the Capresso, I knew what I did NOT want. I seriously considered the Zojirushi CV-DYC40. However, I declined on that for two reasons. First, the Zoji has a huge footprint. It eats up a 9x12 area on your countertop, and it's ~14" tall. Second, it is a dispenser with a spigot. We use a kettle primarily to pour water over coffee in a Chemex or Melitta filter unit. To use the Zoji, you would have to dispense into a pitcher device first and then pour onto the ground coffee, unless you have a step counter where you can keep the Zoji at the higher level. Not very convenient in our home.
So, I looked and looked on Amazon, and one day the DeLonghi DSJM350 popped up. It was advertised as being able to heat to two different temps, and having a 58 oz capacity (as opposed to the Capresso's marginal 48oz). It sounded good, so we gave it a go.
This is one impressive unit! Construction quality is superb. The pot is stainless steel encasing a laboratory grade polymer vessel. The footprint of this unit is modest for a 57 ounce capacity. It takes up only 6x9 on the countertop. The ON/OFF is an UP/DOWN toggle. When you toggle down, the unit heats the water to the boil. When you toggle up, the unit heats the water to ~175 degrees, the correct temperature for green teas, etc. It heats very fast at 1,500W, less than 6-7 min for a full pot. Remarkably, there is absolutely NO PLASTIC ODOR in this unit, either when it is dry or when the water is boiling vigorously. This is amazing.
Now for the doo-dads. When you set the kettle on its base, it emits a chime tone. As the water heats, there is an internal light in the unit that changes progressively from blue to red at the boil (look at "other images" on the Amazon description). The unit shuts itself off when reaches the boil or when you remove the kettle from its base (unlike the Capresso).
By their very nature, electric water kettles are abused from the get-go. The repeated heating, steam, etc. do a number on the components. This DeLonghi seems to be up to the task, and for now, I would have to say this is the best cordless electric water kettle of this type that we have used. Bravo, DeLonghi.

I've been using the Zojirushi water boiler daily for almost a month and have no complaints. It works as promised, the lid is easy to remove, I like how it swivels so it's easy to unplug and has the window for observing the water level, and I LOVE the timer feature. As other reviewers have commented, the water comes in handy for so many other uses: rinsing pans and sticky cereal bowls, jump-starting pasta water, warming water in a dishpan without running the tap for a minute!

Getting the right temp for green tea takes a bit of planning because--as I understand it, at least--it first boils the water and then lets the temp drop to 175, where it then maintains it at 175, rather than just warming it to that temp and then staying there without going all the way to boil first. If I have this wrong, I'm sure someone will jump in to correct me!

Edited to add: I generally use filtered water, so I didn't have to clean the boiler for two months. When I did, I followed the recommendation of another reviewer and purchased a pound of citric acid crystals from our natural foods co-op to use for cleaning, measuring out the grams and then converting it into tablespoons. For me, that worked out to 2 tbsp + 1/4 tsp (YMMV). The cleaning went perfectly and there was no residual smell at all.

We love this and use it for hot tea daily. I have used this heated water to cook thawed shrimp! Lots you can do. VERY handy, used daily, and it's lots of temperature-contolled hot water at the ready. The only complaint that I have is that Amazon delivered it with a rather substantial dent in the side. It cannot be removed, but we didn't send it back because it still works and we wanted to use it. But I ask you, HOW does a major purchase arrive with a large DENT in it??!! The box seemed to be roughly treated. What gives??!!

The tea kettle will have to do, until I can find a better one. It is very, very slow in boiling water. I can brush my teeth, wash my face, cut an apple and the water has not boiled. At the begining this did not bother me , but now I can't stand the slowness of it any longer. I REALLY HATE IT. We bought this kettle in December of 2006 from Amazon and have used it almost daily since then and been very happy. True, after a few months it turned a little brown at the bottom where the heating element is, but since you can easily scrub the brown away I assume it is a deposit of iron oxide from the water rather than corrosion of the kettle. Since this is purely cosmetic and not visible I left it alone.
The design is great, for instance that the base is not directional and stores extra cord. Only the water level display is not exactly easy to read, but I have yet to see a kettle where this is easy.

Now the downside: A few days ago it started leaking, less than 3 years old. I looked into it: One of the level displays developed a crack. Doubting I can find replacement parts I thought I just buy a new one. On December 13th 2006 I paid .88 on Amazon. How was I shocked to see it is now selling for 0! How can that be? I knew it was a great deal back then, but 0? I would not have bought a kettle for that back then and won't now. Luckily, by googling I found a replacement kettle (without base) for (+ shipping and tax). The base can be bought for , so you still should be able to get this great kettle for app. 0!

We've had this kettle for about 3-4 years and it has worked flawlessly. However, it just stopped working and I'm guessing it's going to be cheaper to buy a new one than repairing this one (I don't plan to buy the same model).

A few minor gripes:

1. The water indicator is difficult to read
2. It's heavy (add the full weight of water and it's very heavy)
3. The electrical cord could stand to be 6" longer.


But apparently ours was not Braun durable.

I love this kettle and came back to buy another for a gift and sadly its unavailable. I have had mine for year and use it daily. I have had no problems. It heats quickly, filters the water, and is easy to handle. The bonus is it is so beautiful.

This is the exact same model my husband and I owned in Japan (except the buttons are in English). We love it! We are big tea drinkers, and it's great to have hot water ready all the time. I like the size of the 2.3 quart model...it makes plenty of water for the 2 of us, even if we are making instant noodles, and yet it doesn't take up too much room on the counter. It takes about 15-20 minutes to heat up cold water, but with the 6 hour delay function, this is no problem. It only takes a minute or two to reheat already warm water. This water heater is extremely easy to use, and has many great and well-laid out functions. It is very comparable to the Zojirushi CD-LCC30 Micom 3.0-Liter Electric Dispensing Pot...it has similar features and reliability, but a good bit less expensive. We love this product and highly recommend it!!!

This 2.2 litre water heater by Tiger is great! It is just right for my husband and I. We fill it once a day and it keeps the water hot! The "on after 6 hour" feature is a good way to save energy at night. Our only complaint is that MV Trading took a while to ship our product.

Yes own this exact model. Ordered it from Abes of Maine. For approx same price as shipping here. Ebay has several dealers who sell it. It is performing just as it should and I now have a better understanding why so many stop working with the auto shut off as well as possible turn on when left plugged in and back turned. Not here on this sight but one of the major issues with all of these cordless pots. If and when this one fails I'll look for one with less parts showing inside. We have terrible hard water so it will be interesting to see how this holds up over the long haul. There is a tiny plastic prong you might call it on the bottom of the pot in it's circle that sets onto the heating element base. All in all this is what makes the switch work. As it boils it rocks ever so much and then the switch turns the pot off. It would be very easy to damage this little switch or piece of plastic. Anyway if you check it out you'll find that the on switch will not go to on when off the base. Put on the base and now you can turn it on. But only then. Pretty much all of this style of model works on similar principle. So it's cheap despite the price and if it doesn't leak or spring a leak I'll be happy. I would like the lid to be removable and so as easier to clean and see into the pot. I use a silicon baby bottle brush which is quite gentle to help keep the inside clean when needed. I am not using the metal screen to catch the hard water as it usually doesn't work as the water develops the hard residue as it cools down. However that might change if over time hard water deposits build up inside the pot and the screen would help catch loosened material during boiling that could come off from the pot itself. I can microwaving a cup of water to the boiling point for tea without having hardwater residue but if I try to reheat this same water then it always is a problem and I actually can choke on it towards the last few drinks of the tea. I rinse the pot with softened water and use straight well water with no chorine or treatments what so ever for water to drink. My husband thinks the softwater is just fine. I drink way too much tea to know better and avoid the salted soft water. I would like to have a power off button on the base of the unit. But since most do not have one I do PULL THE PLUG to avoid any chance it could turn itself on....as this is a complaint with some of these models. (1. Not turning off after it reaches boiling when new or after sometime of use. 2. Developing a leak and leaking water all over counter tops making it dangerous for being zapped. 3. Unit's turning themselves on randomly even when no liquid in them cause for potential fire hazard. 4. Those with temp. scales are not accurate or reliable over time. 5. Lids breaking or snapping off. 6. Difficult to find or use fill lines.) So far this one is fine with all but 4 which reads well above Cool after first use on. So not accurate to rely on. If it had an off switch on the base and if the lid removed as well as just smooth surface inside with no angular parts showing I'd give it a full 5 stars. But I always place it back on it's base and I read the manual noting about not putting cold water into a hot pot without waiting up to 30 seconds. And heating the minimal amount of water every time not less. Oh yes some people have complained about these lids breaking or snapping off over time. So handle it with some care and caution. I don't mind having to pull the lid latch...this sort of thing is fine with a design you don't want the lid shooting off while boiling water. I don't like it's fill line and would like an interior one too to help guage the water level while filling from the faucet. I may look for something to measure the minimum amount with as a go between rather than having to try to figure out if it's full enough. If it's at a slight angle to the faucet while filling and not flat in the sink or can't quite fit flat under the faucet this is a small annoyance. It's not a deal breaker but I can see how others might feel so.

This is a nice kettle - a bit heavy but solid. I like the design and its heats water very quickly. The person complaining about plastic doesn't realize that there are many high temperature plastics that are very safe, and I sense no plastic smell or taste with this item. The temperature readout seems quite accurate, very useful if you are making green tea or coffee, which taste better when the water is a bit below the boiling point.
