Has a serious leak after two years. It it attractive but should last longer. I also have a Hamilton Beach toaster that looks good but is poorly designed. Am going to avoid HB products in the future. Its a hassle and expensive to be replacing small appliances every two years.

You find hot pots like these in Asia, where hot green tea is drunk year-round. We decided to purchase one after a visit to friends in Thailand, and it's been a real favorite around the house.

The unit is lined with stainless steel and holds 3 liters or shy of a gallon of water. We use filtered water, of course. You plug it in on the side. The cord has a magnetic end that fits on the unit and then plugs into the wall socket. The magnetic plug is nice, as you can quickly remove the plug from the unit, rather than tug at a unit full of boiling water. You dispense water into your mug by pressing the top button and water comes out the spout under the top in front. I don't think this is something I'd let children use, as they could pull it down on themselves or spill scalding water on themselves if they don't dispense properly. So, adult supervision and keep it out of reach.

The water heats up in about five to seven minutes, boiling the water then holding it at sub-boiling temperature, perfect for tea or instant or filtered coffee or instant cocoa. If you run down the water, you can check the level on the front where there is a level indicator. After you add more water by lifting up the top, you can hit the Reboil button and heat up the additional water. The unit will not keep temperature correctly if you don't fill it above the minimum, so we tend to keep it at least half full at all times.

Here is my experience after using this water pot for a month.

Pro's -
1) Good looking
2) Compact

Con's -
1) In a room that is 70 degree fahrenheit, the pot re-heats automatically every hour or so in order to maintain the water temperature. In my opinion, it is too often. Looks like the insulation is not as good.
2) There is small gap around the edge of the cover. It appears to be a cosmetic issue but it may also cause the insulation less effective.
3) Has plastic smell in water due to the plastic part used for insulation. The smell went away slightly after I boiled lemons in the pot for a couple of times but it is still noticeable.
4) No pumping option. If there is no electricity, it is useless. You cannot carry it with you to picnic.

After having my fill of odd-tasting hot tea, I purchased this stovetop kettle. The gauge will tell when hot enough for green, black tea or hotter still for coffee. It also makes a good cup of powdered cocoa. But don't think you have to watch it- about that point, it will begin to whistle, softly rising to loud. There is little danger of letting it boil dry!
And to keep it looking nice, I use bottled water to keep it from liming up. And the tea is great!

This tea kettle was a huge disappointment for me. First of all, it leaked. Secondly, my intention in getting a tea pot such as this was to have a constant supply of hot water in my office for tea. Once you push the lever down to heat the water, it makes a huge loud noise. It does heat the water rather quickly, but self-shuts off. When you're ready to pour water for a 2nd cup of tea, the water has cooled off and you have to endure the loud noise again and wait. Didn't meet my needs in this area. Then to top it all off, after 2 months the kettle broke and doesn't heat water at all!! Bad choice, save your money and time.

I like the looks and the feature set -- 3 temperatures, autolock with "unlock" button -- is just right.

Boiling a full fresh 2-L pot takes several minutes. I tend to keep mine topped up whenever it gets down to about half, and that takes much less time to bring up to temperature. It does seem to re-boil the water whenever the top is opened, rather than only bringing it up to the set point. That's probably a very good thing, as far as keeping it from becoming a microbial breeding ground.

I used to unplug it when I left the house because I was worried about fire hazards; I stopped after the first few weeks because the outside barely gets warm to the touch, except at the top near the vent, where it's quite warm. When it's boiling water, it does let off a bit of steam through the top vent. When not running the boil cycle it lets out very little steam - I can comfortably cup my hand over the vent for several minutes; the plastic is warmer than the air above the vent - so I usually leave it shoved under a cabinet except when I've just added water. The underside of the cabinet is about 4 inches away and I cannot feel any temperature difference between that surface and the other cabinets nearby.

I do wish I'd bought a larger one. When I purchased this, I thought I'd use it for a cup of tea or two a day and 2 liters would be plenty. Now that I have plenty of hot water on demand, and at just the right temperature, I drink a lot more tea and my roommate has joined me. I also use it for all sorts of other hot-water needs (instant soups and cereals, for example) so that it needs refilling daily.

With that note about the heavy use it gets, it functions beautifully with minimal cleaning. Every now and then when it runs empty I wipe out the interior. Beyond that, I've only descaled it once in over 2 years, and that was because the calcium build-up on the heating element was making it take too long to boil my water -- there was no clogging or pressure/volume reduction.

I didn't review this when I bought it because as much as I loved it, I expected the calcium in the local water to clog it in a matter of weeks to months. Now I have something more valuable to say: it keeps working, month after month, with minimal attention, for years.

We originally purchased the smaller model(WPM20...I believe) and returned it because we would have to run two batches to make enough popcorn for 5 people....it seemed much bigger from the outside of the box than it actually was. One batch in the WPM40 is perfect and we love that it has a heating lamp. Cleanup is pretty easy and the machine just seems better built. No complaints at all!

I purchased this from the Neiman Marcus site where it stated that the kettle held 6-8 oz of unpopped kernels when in fact it does not. It only holds about 4oz of unpopped kernels and even then we still get so many leftover kernels that didn't pop. This machine is terribly overpriced for what it does.

First of all, I find it hard to believe, in this day and age, that this is the only option for an electric kettle that tells you the current temperature of the water, and allows you to dial in the exact temperature you want (at least when I did the research, at the time I didn't see any others). When I first researched digital kettles, I wanted the exact features of this kettle, I expected to find tens of this type of item and then narrow it down. Instead, I found a few kettles that let you select a couple canned temperatures, and wouldn't display the current temp. So, for this, the PINO stands out as having the features I wanted.

I'll start with what I like about the kettle:

-It will quickly and easily heat water to the exact temperature you dial in.
-It is decently well constructed, and it's easy to use.
-It boils water pretty fast, and the displayed temperature seems to be very accurate.
-It has a capacity larger than anything I've needed yet.
-I like that it can be removed from the base to carry the hot water with you to the table or anywhere else, without unplugging it and bringing the cord too.
-When you remove the kettle with hot water in it from the base, the metal sides are hot (of course), but the bottom black base is cool, so you can set it on the counter or whatever without burning it.
-It's all stainless steel inside - no plastic parts.
-Looks pretty nice on the counter.

Some cons:

-This one is my fault, because I didn't real the manual, but the way you are supposed to get the water to your desired temperature, is to, while the base is OFF, set the temperature with the arrows, and then press the on button. It will then heat to your desired temp, and when it gets close, it will slow down and hold your set temperature. The problem is that if you change your mind about the temperature while the kettle is ON, and you change the dialed in temperature, it will heat to boiling before letting it cool to your temperature. The same is true if you just turn the kettle on, and dial in the temp you want and let it go - it will heat to boiling first. This makes the process of getting water to your desired temperature take a lot longer because you have to wait for the water to cool from boiling, and the kettle is pretty well insulated so the further it needs to drop the longer it takes. Unfortunately, this was the intuitive way for me to operate it, and I didn't read the manual, so I was frustrated for a while that it would always heat to boiling and I would have to try to stop it early by constantly monitoring it. So the key here is to always set the temp while the base is off, and then turn it on, unless you want to boil the water. The "con" would be that it's not necessarily intuitive, but as long as you know how to operate it, you're good to go. I just put this here in case anyone is having a similar "problem" with theirs. To reiterate and try to be clear here: if you set the temperature with the base OFF, THEN turn it on, the kettle will heat the water to the dialed in temp and then slow down and hold that temp - it will NOT boil the water first.
-As you may expect, the displayed water temperature does "lag" behind the actual water temperature by a couple degrees, not a big deal, it's only a few seconds and couple degrees behind while heating, and if you let it sit for just a few seconds, it will settle into reading the actual temperature.
-The little water depth gauge that hangs in the middle of the kettle to tell you how much water is in it is very flimsy and can be bent very easy, so it's not very accurate, and on top of that, it falls out easily without even touching it. The first time you think "no big deal I'll push it back in," but eventually you'll just remove it entirely.
-The opening at the top is pretty narrow meaning that you'll probably splash some water down the sides if you are trying to transfer from a mug or glass, which isn't all that big of a deal, but more importantly, because of this small opening, it is hard/impossible to clean inside of the kettle, should it ever need it (I haven't cleaned it yet because I've only boiled water). I don't know if it will ever need to be cleaned, so this may be a non-issue (other than being difficult to transfer water from a mug or cup without spilling/splashing).

Overall this kettle is great, and I'm really glad I bought it. For people who want to heat water to a specific temperature, this kettle is perfect. Another great thing is that it really isn't that expensive when you compare it to other digital kettles that don't even have as many features (such as dial in any temp and actual temp readout). I think the only feature I would add (or thing I would change) with this kettle, is a different style water gauge.. just something to tell how much water is in it (since the one that comes with it is ridiculously cheap and seems to break for everyone within the first couple uses).

This is a terrific and elegant kettle that's easy to use. I considered getting a zojirishi to heat my water for tea and coffee, but 1) they are really huge and really ugly, and 2) they only offer three controls over temperature. The Pino lets you set the temperature then turn it on, and it heats up quickly to that temp (well it heats up quickly for me but I haven't put more than about 16ounces of water in it yet). Sometimes it goes straight to the temp and flips to keep warm, sometimes it starts a new heating cycle a few degrees before the set temp, and that causes it to shoot over the temp you want by about ten degrees. Since it only takes about 1-2 minutes to heat up 16 ounces of water to 195, I'm usually in the kitchen to keep an eye on it though. The water measuring thing is extremely goofy, and very flimsy, it fell off after about ten 'pours' from the kettle.

Update on Nov 30, 2009 - my kettle is now 1.5 years old - no problems and I'm very happy with it!!!


After many years of using Braun WK200W Aqua Express Electric Water Kettle - White, I have decided to switch from plastic to a glass or a stainless steel electric kettle, because of concerns over carcinogens possibly being released from plastics that are exposed to high temperatures. I could not find a glass electric kettle with good reviews, and after a long search I found this all-stainless-steel one. It was not that easy, as most of the stainless steel kettles have that water level indicator window, which is made of plastic.

I'm not sure about the long-term reliability of this kettle - I see a few one-star reviews where it broke in a few months, so I'll just review the features of the kettle based on just two days of using it.

The good:

- The inside is all stainless steel ("just what the doctor ordered!")

- COOL TOUCH = TRUE! As cool as my old plastic kettle! But that's only if you boil the water only once and not a few times one after another. After three consecutive boils, it becomes hot, but still not hot enough to get a burn from a brief touch. Also - after you pour the just boiled water out, the area around the pouring spout will become quite hot, as the outer and inner steel cylinders meet (probably are welded together) at the top of the kettle.

- It looks nice on my kitchen counter

- Boiled water does not have any smells or tastes, which, according to Amazon reviews that I read, many other steel or glass kettles on the market have.

The bad:

- The bottom of the lid is plastic, so the hot steam will hit it, condense, then fall back into the kettle, possibly dissolving some substances from the plastic, which will end up in my hot water, but at least there is less plastic exposure overall. They should have covered the bottom of the lid with a thin layer of steel.

- The base makes the entre thing at least feel unstable: a. it is much smaller in diameter than the bottom of the kettle, b. the kettle could be easily tilted three ways sideways while the base remains flat on the kitchen counter and c. the base is made of thin plastic.

- With the lid fully open in vertical position, it is still hard to pour the water into the kettle in it's front part, because of the mesh strainer that gets on the way. It was much easier with my Braun, where I didn't even need to open the lid at all. On this kettle, with the lid closed, the opening is quite small to fill it up with water.

- Pouring spout is too wide. Pouring the water into a cup must be done slowly or otherwise the water will spread all over the very wide pouring spout and possibly end up outside your tea cup.


I'm willing to live with all the above imperfections, because this is the only "all-stainless-steel" (and "cool-touch") kettle I could find and it does the job.

We bought a cordless kettle because we had melted too many whistling ones on the stove. We NEED the automatic shutoff feature. We didn't want to drag a cord through the tea things while using it either.

We bought this particular kettle because, after reading reviews of the other ones, this one, with its seamless interior, seemed least likely to leak, and more likely than others to last a long time. We liked the extra insulation that keeps the outside from getting blazing hot (though it does get uncomfortably hot to touch). The price was about average for better kettles.

- It heats a full kettle of water VERY fast - in about 2-3 minutes.
- It shuts off about 20 seconds after the water comes to a rolling boil.
- (We have NOT tried turning it on empty to make sure that it shuts off.)
- The handle is sturdy and positioned so that steam from the kettle does not hit your hand while you pour.
- We don't have to worry that we will melt another kettle on the stove because we didn't hear the whistle.

- The kettle's max capacity is smaller than I expected. I have not measured yet to see exactly how much hot water I get, but it takes two kettles to fill our extra large teapot. Since the kettle heats water so quickly, this is only a minor inconvenience.

Things to keep in mind about this kettle:

Setup
- It took a while the first time to figure out how to position the lid. It's not like putting a lid on a saucepan; you have to tilt the lid vertically and align it with slots on the sides to snap it on.
- Setup and break in are fast and easy. I made my first pot of tea about 15 minutes after unpacking the kettle.

Use
We read many of the reviews here before deciding to buy this kettle. The most useful so far were:
- warnings about the fragility of the on/off switch
- the importance of emptying the pot completely each time you use it
- challenges of seeing the max fill line while adding water (it's not that hard, in my opinion)
- warnings about the pouring stream getting very wide the farther you tilt the pot: "don't pour 'too fast'"
- keeping mindful that the kettle does get uncomfortably hot to the touch, especially near the top, even with its insulating layer

I would add
- Don't press the lid release button on the top of the handle soon after the kettle boils. The lid flips open quickly, and you'll get a cloud of very hot steam.

By carefully observing these tips whenever I use the kettle, I have been very happy with it in the month that we've had it. You'll have to read other reviews to find out how well it has lasted.

I've had the Hamilton Beach Cool Touch Tea Kettle for two years and I've had no problems with it. I love it for the following features:

Pros
----
- Stainless Steel
The most important reason I got this kettle is that its interior is made of stainless steel, not plastic. Boiling water in plastic just doesn't sit well with me what with the talk about the health hazards from harmful chemicals (e.g. BPA, DEHA) in plastic leaching into food and drinks.

- Seamless Metal
Inside and out, I simply can't find a a metal seam - the kettle is a one-piece stainless steel construction and have absolutely no joints where pieces of stainless steel are welded together. There is, therefore, no need to worry about the water being contaminated by lead from solder.

- Quick Boil
It boils 40 oz of water, the maximum capacity, in 4 minutes. (I actually timed it. Boil times will of course vary depending on altitude and the initial temperature of the water.)

- "Cool" Touch
When boiling water in the kettle, the exterior of the kettle is warm, not hot, so you don't risk getting burned.

- Wide Opening
The wide opening makes it easy to fill it with water and to clean.

- Easy Plug In and Plug Out
To "plug in" the kettle to the power supply, simply sit the kettle on the base unit. Similarly, simply lift the kettle to "unplug" it. It's a one-handed operation, and there's no cords or plugs to mess with.

- Spring-Loaded Lid
The spring-loaded lid flips open with the press of a button on the handle. The lid can also be easily detached by pressing a button on it to release a catch.

- Auto Shutoff
When the water starts to boil, the power button pops up, the green LED indicator turns off, and the kettle automatically shuts off. There is also an audible "click" as the power button pops up.

- Looks
The kettle looks attractive with its simple curves and brushed stainless steel finish.

As for Cons, there's just one for me:

- Hard-To-See "Max" Water Fill Mark
The interior has a "Max" mark to indicate the maximum water level but it's not easy to see it. Work-around: The lid is hinged in the middle, so when it is flipped open, the bottom half of extends below the rim of the kettle. It so happens that the bottom of the lid lines up with the "Max" mark, so you can use the lid as a marker for gauging when the water level reaches the mark.

Conclusion
----------
The Hamilton Beach Cool Touch Tea Kettle is attractive, easy to use, and boils water quickly. I don't think you can go wrong with this one.

I'm adequately delighted with this kettle. I wanted one because I was tired of raising the temperature of my kitchen every morning by boiling water on the gas stove. It really was a problem. Any kettle would fix that issue, but I wanted one that wasn't made of plastic. There is a bit of exposure from the water level window, though, which is kind of a bummer. I might have chosen a different one had I realized that, but I'm not going to go through the trouble of sending it back. I will say that it looks like the level-checker uses some kind of extra side channel, so the plastic window isn't directly on the main part of the kettle's interior, so perhaps that minimizes plastic-leaching heat exposure somehow...maybe wishful thinking on my part.
There was no funky smell or electrical burning aroma that others have mentioned on some of the other models. It gets hot on the exterior, which is fine with me. (No kids in my house.) The cord wraps up neatly inside the base, only exposing the length you need.

WARNING: If you have arthritis or hand-grip issues you might want to keep looking. It's sort of heavy even empty, and not the easiest thing to pick up, and since it's hot you can't easily double-hand it. I can just handle it, and I do believe my pouring hand has been getting stronger from the task.

I really like this electric kettle. It has a smaller footprint than my previous appliance and boils water much more rapidly.
My only (very minor) complaint is that it is not as easy to see the water level in other than bright light but that is easily remedied.

My new GF really needed a better tea kettle, so I was so pleased to find this one. She said it was one of her best Christmas presents, and got rid of her old kettle. Imagine my chagrin when 3 weeks later it started massively leaking hot water all over her counter and getting everything else waterlogged. I am really disappointed.
